![]() ![]() What I didn’t expect was how hilarious it could be, and, nearing the end, a bit bittersweet. I knew this book would be charming and inventive, and it absolutely was. However, I imagine that if I become a father one day, and read this to my children as I plan to, it will set an impossibly high bar for what my children would expect from their father! I’m a writer too, and occasionally a doodler, but I’m no Tolkien! But I enjoy this book so much that I’d read it to them anyway. I think I would have loved it as a boy, as much or moreso than I do as a man. Recommendation: If you have children, this book can quickly become a beloved yearly tradition for your whole family, as it was for Tolkien’s. It is highly rereadable, both for its relative brevity and its abundance of charm and invention. Re-readability: I do believe this will be an annual tradition for me, from now on.Every year, Father Christmas answered them, often with accompanying pictures. ![]() Tolkien would write letters to Father Christmas.

Reminiscent of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, she depicts an elitist, upper class gentry prevailing alongside a permanent underclass of the terminally poor. Nancy Isenberg, however, plunges deep into the murky waters the American story as she examines almost five centuries of white, European life on this continent, retelling the glittering story from the perspective of the underdogs. Winston Churchill famously said, “History is written by the victors,” and like other victors, America prefers to feature her most flattering side in her histories. They are lazy, and because they have brought poverty upon themselves, offering them any help will only enable their slothfulness further. As I grew older, I learned that even though it is a lovely myth, accepting it as true has a very dark side: Those who do not ‘succeed’ simply do not try hard enough. You know the one: America is a land of equal opportunity, a country where anyone can get ahead if they are willing to work hard, a classless nation where one’s future is not predetermined by one’s birth.
